Serving Our Community Our police officers have a broad range of specialized skills. Several of our police officers are military veterans with security specialties or have prior experience with police or other emergency-service agencies. Several possess baccalaureate degrees or have completed graduate study. The officers are selected after a thorough investigation that is designed to choose individuals who are dedicated, sensitive, and display good communications skills. They are certified through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board after completing 480 hours of basic training followed by an additional 640 hours in the DPS Field Training Officer (FTO) program. Members of the DPS participate in new student orientation (SOAR) each year meeting new students and their parents. Information is made available through printed materials to acquaint them with campus safety efforts. |
