Authority of DPS Police Officers

SIUC Police officers possess the same powers as any other police officer in the State of Illinois in counties where the University has property and/or concern and if there is violations of state law, city or county ordinances,  and University rules or regulations. Officers work in cooperation with the Carbondale Police Department, the Jackson and Williamson County Sheriff's Offices, and other local law enforcement and emergency responder agencies.

Serving Our Community

Our officers are assigned throughout the University year round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are armed sworn police officers who have received the same training as municipal and county officers. They respond to calls of any nature, including all campus emergencies: fire, accidents, physical crimes, and disturbances.  A wide range of non-emergency related services are also available to the University community.

Our police officers have a broad range of specialized skills. Several of our police officers are military veterans with security specialties or have prior experience with police or other emergency-service agencies. Several possess baccalaureate degrees or have completed graduate study. The officers are selected after a thorough investigation that is designed to choose individuals who are dedicated, sensitive, and display good communications skills. They are certified through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board after completing 480 hours of basic training followed by an additional 640 hours in the DPS Field Training Officer (FTO) program.

Members of the DPS participate in new student orientation (SOAR) each year meeting new students and their parents. Information is made available through printed materials to acquaint them with campus safety efforts.
