Safety and Crime Prevention Programs and Services

DPS offers several educational crime prevention programs and safety services to the campus and surrounding communities. The Crime Prevention Program is comprised of officers who provide public relations programming to university affiliated persons, other schools, and community groups by request.

Safety Programs

Alcohol, Drugs, and DUI -General information about the effects of alcohol and drugs and how they can affect your daily life.

Basic Crime Prevention - Basic Crime Prevention techniques you can use in your home or car.

Fatal Vision - Fatal Vision Simulator Goggles will be the major device for demonstrating how quickly impairment can turn fun into devastating consequences for anyone who drives while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Requires audience participation.

Gangs - Information on identifying gang names, graffiti, and any recent interaction with members on campus. (Presented to staff only, this is a 2-hour program.)

General Rap Session - Want to talk to a police officer one-on-one? This program allows the audience to bring up their own topics and concerns.

Officer Friendly - Used to introduce a police officer to very young children. Stickers and a tour of a squad car are the highlights (This is a 20 minute program).

Sexual Assault/Common Sense Self Defense - General information and techniques to avoid becoming a victim of sexual assault. This does not include physical self defense training.

Violence in the Workplace - Current information to help you recognize and combat violence in your workplace. (Presented to staff only, this is a 2-hour program.)

All crime prevention programs are approximately one hour,
unless otherwise indicated.

Campus Assistance Vehicle (CAV) - The CAV is operated by the Saluki (Student) Patrol Program. The patrol staffs the CAV during the evening hours to provide additional parking lot security and to provide assistance to motorists stranded on campus.

Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System - A program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques taught by certified police officers. The 12-hour program takes four three-hour evenings to complete. The comprehensive course begins with awareness prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing onto the basics of hands-on self-defense training. RAD is not a martial arts program. (One course offered per semester, or by appointment with groups of 15 attendees or more.)

University House Watch Program - Students living in Family Housing Areas (Evergreen Terrace and Southern Hills) can register with the House Watch Program by calling 453-DPS1 (3771) anytime. Police officers will check the doors and windows of your residence while you are away. There is no cost for this service.
