Employment Opportunities

The Department of Public Safety offers employment, as openings occur, in a diverse educational setting including police officer, telecommunicator, parking enforcement, LAN, management, clerical, and student work positions.

To apply for all full-time positions (everything except student workers) you must contact Human Resources at (618) 536-3369 or at the SIU Human Resources website. Applications cannot be submitted to the Police Department.

To apply for part-time Saluki Patrol student work positions, you may download the application below, fill it out, and drop it off to any Telecommunicator at SIU Police Department (see instructions below) or stop by the SIU Police Department at 705A South Washington Street and pick up an application from the Telecommunicator on duty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license
  • No record of conviction of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude
  • Eligible for bonding
  • At least 21 years of age

Applicants from other state universities in Illinois (members of the State University Civil Service System) can apply as lateral transfers and do not have to go through the testing process. Current police officers from other jurisdictions are also encouraged to apply, but must go through the testing process due to civil service system rules.

Saluki Patrol (On-line application)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a student at SIU Carbondale
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • No record of criminal conviction (excluding minor trafic offenses)
  • Must meet all requirements for employment, as set forth by the Financial Aid Office at SIU
  • Must have completed one semester at SIU. Exceptions: transfer students, graduate or married students
  • Must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.25
  • Entry employees are subject to a probationary period of two semesters
  • Entry employees must successfully complete the Saluki Patrol Field Training Program
  • Must complete and sign an application for employment and background investigation release
  • Miminum age of 18 years

Applicants that meet all of the above listed requirements will be considered for employment. The application process consists of:

  • Oral Interview
  • Background Investigation
